WHEN STORY TALKS IN MANY WAYS… By E PLUS The Storyteller.

I actually had a different title for this discourse; however I chose to settle with the above title that was suggested by C.O.D, one of the youngest members of E PLUS The Storyteller Creative Children Club, (who also doubles as one of the admins, a visual graphic artist, Storyteller, and producer.)
particularly because it best describes and captures the narrative. Now, let me start with this question:
When you write or narrate a story, what impartation do you want it to have on your audience or viewers?

What do you expect them to get from the story? Whatever your answer is, there is an underlining narrative that plays out in every story, either subtly or overtly, and that is the need for your story to be visible from every angle of discourse, hence making your story holistic and accessible.

When a story talks in many ways, it moves from a straight jacket narrative to an open-minded discourse; a story can be viewed from various perspectives that relates to the realities of life, ranging from social to political. This is where the creative prowess of a writer or narrator becomes visible; how he/she can introduce various narrative dynamics and components as they interplay to form a holistic picture, speaks volumes.

To take this discourse further, let’s look at the various highlights of a story that talks in many ways:
*Flexible discourse.
*Holistic approach.
*Representational.
*Receptive.
*Constructive plotting.
*Open-ended Discourse.

By extension, a story that talks in many ways, explores various moods, tones, underlining connotations, and expressions that initiate actions from the audience/viewers; now, let’s explore this, practically.

Title of Story: Sense of Direction. (A REFLECTION OF OUR REALITY). E PLUS The Storyteller.

I remember that evening, when everyone had returned home from work, the dogs were barking while the rats ran around the entire neighborhood with reckless abandon; the scene could actually have been described like that of a political rally- BUT FOR THE ABSENSE OF THE USUAL GOODIES. For a moment, I was lost and quite speechless; amidst the crowd, I watched the Police Officers, push the ladies into the Police van, and to say the least, it was such a show of shame! Everyone was talking about the incident, and apparently they had their various versions. However, one thing stood out:‘THE LADIES OF THE NIGHT’ (Commonly called ‘Women of easy virtue’) would be spending time behind bars! And one question continued to reecho in my mind, thus:
At what point did these ladies lost their sense of direction?

At what point did virtue give way for anything-goes mentality?

And the more I continued to ponder, the more I realized that these questions is quite relevant, even as it relates to our reality as a nation and a people:  At what point did we lost our sense of direction?I guess this is the kind of reflection that draws us to the reality that we are faced with as humans, who are quite fallible and vulnerable. The society is full of people with different expectations, and if that is not quite a handful of demand, I wonder what, is? The need to respond to these demands is what puts us on a ‘diagnostic framework’ i.e. how we are able to respond to these demands.

THE LADIES OF THE NIGHT are metaphorical representations of the ripple effect of losing one’s sense of direction, where decorum has been thrown into the gutters, and human dignity trashed by the quest and desire for vanity, and as others would put it, ‘To make ends meet’, ‘To survive’. We are in a space where we are constantly faced with the ‘roller coaster’ demands of choosing between what is right and what is necessary, and quite often than not, blessed enough to have the best of both worlds. As I watched the culprits being taken away by the Police Officers, I could also perceive that they had a sense of guilt and betrayal, a sense of brokenness coupled with disappointment and uncertainty, and this singular narrative has brought me to a point where the entire state of the nation continues to play out, and one word just registers-

Anarchy, Outright ANARCHY!

And, yes! Just like the LADIES OF THE NIGHT, the Nation is fast becoming a victim of the poor choices made by its citizen, as it continues to drift from its main course, and this, is triggering emotions on every side.

How long will we continue to stray away?

How long will we continue to look the other side, as things deteriorate?

How long will we continue in this condescending lifestyle?

How long will we continue to lose every sense of direction?

Everyone is guilty! Everyone has questions to answer !And until we begin to retrace our steps, we might just continue to run around in circles! The rest of that night was filled with unending sound of siren, and loud horns, as the police van, made its way through the ever busy road, leaving behind the curious stare of the people who couldn’t wait for the next headline….

From the above story, we can see that the story comprises a combination and interaction of various elements and highlights of creative writing techniques- from the opening to the resolution of the story, all touching base- from an individual to a wider spectrum. When story talks in many ways, it becomes a matter of  conveying various thoughts, ideas, perception and perspective and the transition relies on your creative prowess, coupled with the creative ability to deliver.
