#ThisThursday HOW INSURERS CONTINUE KEEPING PROMISES AS CUSTOMER BEHAVIOURS CHANGE By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon

#ThisThursday HOW INSURERS CONTINUE KEEPING PROMISES AS CUSTOMER BEHAVIOURS CHANGE  By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon Many of us have continued to wonder how insurance companies succeed at what they do with so little that we pay, as premium, for such large risks that they cover! To provide coverage against accident, death, fire, theft and third party liabilities on a vehicle worth N10m or N100m for a Comprehensive Insurance Premium of N500,000 or N5m a year, respectively, sounds incomprehensible and unbelievable to those who are yet to understand the workings of insurance.  Sometimes, for such highly valued vehicles, the N500,000 or N5m paid as Premium may not be sufficient to fix the damaged fender or rear lights of such vehicles, not to talk about a full accident where lives are lost. Prior to the tech era, insurers that were determined to keep their promises to us, would consider MORAL HAZARD seriously, so the character of the person or organization taking insurance was probably the biggest

#ThisMonday INSURANCE TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITIZATION: CAN IT BE MADE SIMPLE? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon

#ThisMonday  INSURANCE TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITIZATION: CAN IT BE MADE SIMPLE? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon Disclosure: I am neither a Techie nor a Digital Native, I am just an Online User of Data and Information to improve my knowledge of Strategy, Risk Management and Insurance! That said, I decided to do this write-up to seek answers to the increasing concerns of insurance and non-insurance persons about the state of insurance in the emergent digital era. A quick look at how the insurance industry in Nigeria has developed within the technology age reveals significant progress but digitization seems to make it look like the industry is about to start. The sense of technology, as I experienced while working as an employee years ago, meant the replacement of typewriters with desktops, analogue phones with "speaker phones", meetings with conference calls and filing shelves with automatic filing systems. Next came the attempt to have insurance software! Microsoft Excel served as the too

#ThisFriday CAN WOMEN #InspireInclusion IN THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon

#ThisFriday CAN WOMEN #InspireInclusion IN THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon        Every year, since 1910, we  have been celebrating the International Women's Day and this year, the message is not different: Everybody should work to engender an environment where more women are given opportunity to be relevant and contribute towards socio-economic development in our communities.  In my community - the insurance industry in Nigeria and Africa - our women have since proven that they can be relied upon for excellence, continuous improvement and impact! They sit as CEOs and C-level Executives in many leading insurance companies in Nigeria and across Africa, and extensively influence decisions that have seen many young people rise to take up challenges that were hitherto reserved for highly experienced professionals of the other gender.😊 Today, I see more women in the role of directing the general affairs of insurance professionals and insurance companies (including brok

WHAT WILL MAKE THE UNINSURED BECOME INSURED?

Image
#ThisWednesday WHAT WILL MAKE THE UNINSURED BECOME INSURED? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon Sometimes, you will think there are people that will never buy insurance, never be insured and never recommend insurance to others. These people easily say "God is my Insurer!" "With God, I don't need insurance!" "In Nigeria, insurance is a scam!" "Insurance companies never pay claims!" "With insurance in Nigeria, it's the more you look, the less you see!" So, you would think that you will "never" catch them doing any form of insurance. Right? Wrong! Irrespective of religion and culture, or even an ugly past family experience with insurance, these people have come round to become Policyholders of repute. The circumstances under which they change their stance about insurance include but not limited to: 1. Employment - Employers do insurance for their employees; 2. Application for Bank Loan - Banks require Loan Applicants to show evidenc

INSURANCE EXPERIENCES: WHAT IF VERSUS IF NOT FOR

Image
#ThisMonday INSURANCE EXPERIENCES: WHAT IF VERSUS IF NOT FOR By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon In some sense, our realities today are the experiences we shared from the past without considering they could ever happen again. Some things we meant to prepare us for the "WHAT IF" moments, are actually happening to make the experiences real again, and have some of us appreciate the value of insurance more than we would want to accept. Those "IF NOT FOR" moments in response to the ugly events have conveyed the essence of insurance significantly.  WHAT IF... • What if your pricey vehicle was hit by a commercial bus while a Vulcanizer was checking your tyres on the roadside? • What if you were home to visit your Constituents and as discussions were going on regarding the harsh economic conditions, they became riotous? • What if your products being conveyed from one end of the country to another, got raided and destroyed after the Truck Driver attempted to escape the mob and the truc

#ThisMonday KNOW YOUR INSURERS (KYI): LEADERSHIP CHANGES AMONG INSURANCE COMPANIES IN NIGERIA

Image
#ThisMonday KNOW YOUR INSURERS (KYI): LEADERSHIP CHANGES AMONG INSURANCE COMPANIES IN NIGERIA By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon It has been Fifty-seven (57) days since the expiration of the deadline given by the Insurance Regulator in Nigeria, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) for all Managing Directors/CEOs  and Executive Directors, who had spent 10 years and 12 years respectively to vacate their positions in line with the Tenure Limits stipulated in the Corporate Governance Guidelines for the insurance industry in Nigeria.  Accordingly, many insurance companies complied with the directive and today, they have new CEOs on board, and EDs too in some cases, to steer the affairs of these insurance companies.  Expectedly, the Immediate Past MD/CEOs and EDs have been accommodated in the emergent holding companies to ensure continued delivery of excellent customer service and claims payments.  As you may be aware, insurance professionals mature into higher positions based on the complexities o

A Story About Molly.  Written by Sumayyah Oluwafunbi Ogunsola  This is a short story about Molly. She was petite, about 10 years old , with loving parents but from a poor home. One fateful day, Molly went to school as usual and saw a 500 naira note on the floor. She looked around to see if anyone saw her, then stuffed the money into her pocket. When she returned home, she showed the money to her parents, and they asked her where she got it from. "Well, I picked it up from the floor. Finders are keepers" she replied haughtily. Her parents were furious and made her confess to the principal. Molly was suspended for a week. A nd that's the end of the story!  Did you like it? The moral of the story is to always be honest and kind, and to return things that are not yours. Thank you for listening to this story on SUMMY'S GALAXY, bye for now 🙌? ENOUGH OF THE MEDIOCRITY!

There's urgent need for professionalism to return to schools. The educational system is anchored on integrity and nobility thus must not be short-changed for anything else. As educators and teachers, the onos lies on you to be deliberate in instilling both knowledge and strength of character in your students. The question is, how seriously are we taking this narrative? What sort of picture are you portraying when you endorse cheating, malpractices and corruption in the school? What sort of example are you giving to the students when you endorse BULLYING and TANTRUMS, while giving the perpetrators a pat on the back? What type of generation do you hope to breed when you go ahead to validate the lackadaisical attitude of students towards achieving excellence while aiding and abating the 'SHORTCUT APPROACH '?    It's time to pause and ponder over the ripple and adverse effects of your actions, especially as an educator who should know better and serve with utmost sense of

MY OTHER WORLD... Written by Sumayyah

Image
MY OTHER WORLD     Written by Sumayyah Oluwafunbi Ogunsola   My mother bade me goodnight as she closes my bedroom door, switching the lights off. I say my night prayers and drift off to sleep. “Whirrrr!” the soft whirring of machines floats its way into my eardrums. Disoriented, I stand on my tired feet, wondering where I am and what is making such a strange noise. Subconsciously, my jaw drops as I find myself floating in a futuristic, AI-empowered, strange sort of place. Robots moving so gracefully like dainty ballerinas and the pillows suspended in the air feels like fluffy clouds. I look beneath me, and I realise that I am not standing on anything at all- I am levitating! Giddy with excitement, I begin to prance around, feeling like a swan from the ballerina’s show.   “ Hello there. ” An automated, robotic voice speaks. “ I see you have found your way to our world” the voice continues. I smile at the robot, unable to speak, as I have become overwhelmed. “Follow

That’s NOT my father! Sumayyah Oluwafunbi Ogunsola

That’s NOT my Father!       Sumayyah Oluwafunbi  Ogunsola              It’s a bleak, dark late evening accompanied by torrent of rain and the howling of the wind; the power is out. My father and I sit down in the parlour, looking at each other and sighing in disappointment, as our fun day out was ruined. I glance at our pet cat, Tata, to see that she is fast asleep.               Exasperated, my father launches himself on the sofa and says to me, “I am going to get Starbucks. Wait for me.” Worried, I respond “In the rain, and at this time, dad? You have heard how dangerous people lurk in the cloak of darkness...” He cuts me off. Tells me there is nothing to worry about and that he would be back soon, after all, 'he is just going to Starbucks, right?' I shut the door behind him. 10 minutes. 15 minute… Tick tock! Tick tock!  I get irritated as an hour has passed since dad left the house. My hand trembling, I am about to dial the emergency number, when... Bang! Ba

The Wailing Creatures Written by Sumayyah Oluwafunbi Ogunsola

The Wailing Creatures  W ritten by Sumayyah Oluwafunbi Ogunsola     With a big smile on and shiny gleaming teeth plastered on my sweaty face, I step inside the dusty building with the big bold inscription: ‘ WELCOME TO THE ZOO!’  As I walk around with my black heels making a pit-pat, click-clack sound, my eager brown irises get locked in a trance with the brownish red Hawaiian bird. The bird’s fluffy feathers gently ruffles, and his sad eyes stare at mine. ’13 YEARS OLD’ the sign on the cage says. I take a deep, heavy breath and trudge forward.           “Oooh!” the wail of a mama chimpanzee reaches my sensitive ears, causing my skin to have a minute goosebumps.    Heartbreaking scene of a mother chimpanzee and her child in black, rusted chains and anguished expressions on their faces, permanently etches itself in my head. ‘MOTHER: 29. BABY: 4’ sign, displays.           My white eyeballs blur as I get teary-eyed with my heart throbbing in my chest. The ground suddenly rumbles and
