"We no go gree o! We no go gree! Give us our right! We no go gree!" The youths of Kolobri chorused as they stationed themselves at the gate of the state house. By this time, Honourable Warebi and the rest of the staff had rushed out of the office. Staring at the crowd for a moment, Honourable Warebi tried to put his thoughts together before addressing them. He raised his hand as a gesture of appeal to get the youths' attention. Momentarily, the chant died down.and then he proceeded to talk.
"Vibrant youths of Kolobri, I greet you! Without wasting much of your time, the entire members of the state house truly appreciate your patience thus far. As the honourable chairman of this prestigious community, I can confidently reassure you that all of your worries and concerns are being looked at."
"Na so dem tell us the oda time..."We will look into it! We will look into it!" ...but na di same story!" One of the youths lamented.
"Yes!!!" The rest chorused.
"And the worse part be say, una go dey make diz empty promises like say we be mumu! Una tink say we no dey remember?" Another youth added.
"Exactly!!!" The rest concurred.
Perceiving that the atmosphere had become quite charged, Honourable Warebi moved closer.
"My ever courageous youths of Kolobri...I hear you, I feel your pain, the entire members of the state house hear you. We are not insensitive to the current situation that also affects us as an entire community. We are in constant talks with these multinational oil companies, and we are getting positive responses--they are willing to have audience with everyone," Honourable Warebi reassured.
"Na so we hear last week! Time neva reach wey dem go start to do wetin dem suppose to do? See as all our farm land dun spoil finish! Our fish, our crops, our water...all in the name of say dem dey find oil for our land! E naw pure o! Dem suppose compensate us sharp sharp! Naw be all diz long long talk!" Another youth responded.
"Very well said...and that is why I will urge you all to be patient...we have come this far, let's wait to reap the fruit of our labour. The good news is that we will all be sitting together with the multinationals to place our demands--everybody will smile," Honourable Warebi emohasised.
The leader of the youth, Laye stepped closer, starring at honourable Warebi eyeball to eyeball.
"Okay...like dis now, you dun talk am and we dun hear. We go give the entire state house one week to shake bodi! If not....Hmmmm....." Laye said with a resounding note of warning and the rest of the youths nodded their heads concurrently.
Honourable Warebi--quite relieved, put on a reassuring smile.
"We no go gree o! We no go gree! Give us our right! We no go gree!" The youths chanted as they turned back--the echoes of their chants trailing the entire state house. Honourable Warebi turned to the rest of the staff and beckoned on them to return to the office.
