Turmeric (🟡 the bright yellow-orange spice) also goes by several other names, depending on language, region, or form. Here are the most common ones: 🌿 Scientific and English Names Scientific name: Curcuma longa Other English names: Indian saffron (because of its color) Golden spice or golden root --- 🌍 Names in Other Languages Hindi/Urdu: Haldi Arabic: Kurkum (كركم) Swahili: Manjano French: Curcuma Spanish: Cúrcuma Chinese: Jiang huang (姜黄) --- 🇳🇬 Nigerian Local Names Yoruba: Atale pupa (literally “red/bright ginger”) Hausa: Gangamau or Kurkum Igbo: Often called Tumeric (same as English) or Okpowo odo in some dialects. --- Turmeric is closely related to ginger, and they’re both rhizomes.
