"Moju! Where is the maize nau? You know your father will soon be here! Emi O Fe Wahala O! (I don't want trouble) " Olori called out to her daughter.


"Maami! Mo n bo! (I am on my way)" Moju responded as she appeared with a bowl of corn.


"Ese Oko mi. Oya! Let's begin to sieve it." Olori said as she began to spread them. Moju heaved a heavy sigh of discontent.


"Ah ahn! Moju, kilode? (Moju, what is it?)" Olori asked curiously.


"Hmmm.. it's the way you are being treated in this house! Ah! Maami, to be honest, I will never get married in this Green land!" Moju lamented.


"Ah! Don't say that o! In fact don't let people here you say that o! How can you be uttering such a statement?" Olori reacted.


"Why not, Maami? I see the way my father treats you, and the way the rest of the men in this community treat their wives.. I'm telling you it's quite discouraging! After frolicking with other women, they will come home to their wives and ask for food! Ah! Maami, me, I won't take it o!" Moju lamented further. Olori placed her right hand on Moju's shoulder, and smiled.


"My Daughter, Omo  Dada! (Good Child)

You see... Life is all about wisdom, he, who is patient can cook stone. If you scratch your body the way it itches, you will inflict it with injuries. It's not about who talks loudest, it's about who is making wise decisions. Marriage is about give and take. Do you think I don't see chief with all those small small girls? I do! But they can't replace me, I will always have my place, intact!" Olori said.


"And you are just okay with that, Maami?" Moju said.


"Abi na? What's more than contentment in life? So long you have your peace of mind." Olori replied. As Moju continued to stare at her mother in awe, Chief walked into the house.


"Ekabo! Oko mi (Welcome my husband)." Olori greeted


"Hmmmm... and you! So O le ki mi? (And you... won't you greet me?) " Chief exclaimed at his daughter, Moju.

The Wailing Creatures  W ritten by Sumayyah Oluwafunbi Ogunsola     With a big smile on and shiny gleaming teeth plastered on my sweaty face, I step inside the dusty building with the big bold inscription: ‘ WELCOME TO THE ZOO!’  As I walk around with my black heels making a pit-pat, click-clack sound, my eager brown irises get locked in a trance with the brownish red Hawaiian bird. The bird’s fluffy feathers gently ruffles, and his sad eyes stare at mine. ’13 YEARS OLD’ the sign on the cage says. My father and I sit down in the parlour, looking at each other and sighing in disappointment, as our fun day out was ruined. I glance at our pet cat, Tata, to see that she is fast asleep.               Exasperated, my father launches himself on the sofa and says to me, “I am going to get Starbucks.
