INSURANCE EXPERIENCES: WHAT IF VERSUS IF NOT FOR

By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon

In some sense, our realities today are the experiences we shared from the past without considering they could ever happen again.

Some things we meant to prepare us for the "WHAT IF" moments, are actually happening to make the experiences real again, and have some of us appreciate the value of insurance more than we would want to accept.

Those "IF NOT FOR" moments in response to the ugly events have conveyed the essence of insurance significantly.

WHAT IF...

• What if your pricey vehicle was hit by a commercial bus while a Vulcanizer was checking your tyres on the roadside?

• What if you were home to visit your Constituents and as discussions were going on regarding the harsh economic conditions, they became riotous?

• What if your products being conveyed from one end of the country to another, got raided and destroyed after the Truck Driver attempted to escape the mob and the truck hit the culvert?

• What if your Association was holding its first meeting of the year at a renowned hotel in town and an angry crowd invaded the venue, damaging vehicles and carting away valuables?

Any IF NOT FOR that saved you from the incident or minimized your financial losses or compensated you for the losses can best be described as "Your Insurer"!

IF NOT FOR...

• If not for the rapid response of the security personnel from the barracks near your home or the hotel;

• If not for the call you received that delayed you from getting there on time; and

• If not for the insurance policies you had that enabled you replace the items that were destroyed or stolen.

We are confronted with these experiences daily via the news reports or persons within our circles, yet we allow the fear wane off until the next incident without giving insurance much thought or attention.

To make insurance work for us, we need to employ it, just as some of us who are employed, and it will be paid off when the time is due. You cannot pay whom you had not engaged to work on pay day!

For more insights on WHAT IF versus IF NOT FOR, join us this Wednesday in Lagos, for the launch of "When Life Happens", a book written by Chima Nwachukwu.

It is my hope and belief that those who have insurance coverages, whether formal or informal, will continue to enjoy the "Peace of Mind Advantage" over other who remain uninsured or underinsured.

Is it going to be: WHAT IF you didn't read this; or IF NOT FOR this write-up you read?😊

Let your comments and questions come as always.

I remain...
