#ThisThursday HOW INSURERS CONTINUE KEEPING PROMISES AS CUSTOMER BEHAVIOURS CHANGE By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon

#ThisThursday HOW INSURERS CONTINUE KEEPING PROMISES AS CUSTOMER BEHAVIOURS CHANGE  By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon Many of us have continued to wonder how insurance companies succeed at what they do with so little that we pay, as premium, for such large risks that they cover! To provide coverage against accident, death, fire, theft and third party liabilities on a vehicle worth N10m or N100m for a Comprehensive Insurance Premium of N500,000 or N5m a year, respectively, sounds incomprehensible and unbelievable to those who are yet to understand the workings of insurance.  Sometimes, for such highly valued vehicles, the N500,000 or N5m paid as Premium may not be sufficient to fix the damaged fender or rear lights of such vehicles, not to talk about a full accident where lives are lost. Prior to the tech era, insurers that were determined to keep their promises to us, would consider MORAL HAZARD seriously, so the character of the person or organization taking insurance was probably the biggest

#ThisMonday INSURANCE TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITIZATION: CAN IT BE MADE SIMPLE? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon

#ThisMonday  INSURANCE TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITIZATION: CAN IT BE MADE SIMPLE? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon Disclosure: I am neither a Techie nor a Digital Native, I am just an Online User of Data and Information to improve my knowledge of Strategy, Risk Management and Insurance! That said, I decided to do this write-up to seek answers to the increasing concerns of insurance and non-insurance persons about the state of insurance in the emergent digital era. A quick look at how the insurance industry in Nigeria has developed within the technology age reveals significant progress but digitization seems to make it look like the industry is about to start. The sense of technology, as I experienced while working as an employee years ago, meant the replacement of typewriters with desktops, analogue phones with "speaker phones", meetings with conference calls and filing shelves with automatic filing systems. Next came the attempt to have insurance software! Microsoft Excel served as the too

#ThisFriday CAN WOMEN #InspireInclusion IN THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon

#ThisFriday CAN WOMEN #InspireInclusion IN THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon        Every year, since 1910, we  have been celebrating the International Women's Day and this year, the message is not different: Everybody should work to engender an environment where more women are given opportunity to be relevant and contribute towards socio-economic development in our communities.  In my community - the insurance industry in Nigeria and Africa - our women have since proven that they can be relied upon for excellence, continuous improvement and impact! They sit as CEOs and C-level Executives in many leading insurance companies in Nigeria and across Africa, and extensively influence decisions that have seen many young people rise to take up challenges that were hitherto reserved for highly experienced professionals of the other gender.😊 Today, I see more women in the role of directing the general affairs of insurance professionals and insurance companies (including brok

WHAT WILL MAKE THE UNINSURED BECOME INSURED?

Image
#ThisWednesday WHAT WILL MAKE THE UNINSURED BECOME INSURED? By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon Sometimes, you will think there are people that will never buy insurance, never be insured and never recommend insurance to others. These people easily say "God is my Insurer!" "With God, I don't need insurance!" "In Nigeria, insurance is a scam!" "Insurance companies never pay claims!" "With insurance in Nigeria, it's the more you look, the less you see!" So, you would think that you will "never" catch them doing any form of insurance. Right? Wrong! Irrespective of religion and culture, or even an ugly past family experience with insurance, these people have come round to become Policyholders of repute. The circumstances under which they change their stance about insurance include but not limited to: 1. Employment - Employers do insurance for their employees; 2. Application for Bank Loan - Banks require Loan Applicants to show evidenc

INSURANCE EXPERIENCES: WHAT IF VERSUS IF NOT FOR

Image
#ThisMonday INSURANCE EXPERIENCES: WHAT IF VERSUS IF NOT FOR By Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon In some sense, our realities today are the experiences we shared from the past without considering they could ever happen again. Some things we meant to prepare us for the "WHAT IF" moments, are actually happening to make the experiences real again, and have some of us appreciate the value of insurance more than we would want to accept. Those "IF NOT FOR" moments in response to the ugly events have conveyed the essence of insurance significantly.  WHAT IF... • What if your pricey vehicle was hit by a commercial bus while a Vulcanizer was checking your tyres on the roadside? • What if you were home to visit your Constituents and as discussions were going on regarding the harsh economic conditions, they became riotous? • What if your products being conveyed from one end of the country to another, got raided and destroyed after the Truck Driver attempted to escape the mob and the truc
